Achieve Your Life Goals with the Art of Planning

goals Aug 02, 2021

Life goals are a commonality for everyone. Regardless of where you are in life, what industry you’re in, or where you are on the career ladder, you’ll probably have some type of life goal. But, how often do these goals or ideas become a reality? How often do you achieve what you want in some capacity?

According to Inc.Com, only 8% of people actually achieve their life goals. I want you to be in that 8%.

This article by Jeff Boss for Forbes highlights how goal setting will improve your focus and help you achieve your goals. But, how does planning come into this?

Planning Helps You Know What’s Needed to Achieve Your Life Goals

When you plan your goals, you effectively determine what is needed in order to get the results you want. Your goal plan should highlight every step, process, and mini-goal needed to achieve your overall goal or life goals. How else will you know how long it will take you to achieve your goals? How will you know what action steps are required to get you from where you are now to where you want to be?

If you want more reading on how to DEFINE your goals, check out this article by the Forbes Coaching Council. It’s a great resource.

You Can Visualize What You Want to Achieve

How easy is it to forget a goal that you can’t see? Making a plan helps you to visualize what it is you want to achieve. It’s that simple. Whether this goal is personal or professional, planning helps you to visualize exactly what it is that you want to achieve. Don’t be afraid to go big here - the list of what you are capable of is endless.

Goal Setting is Easier with Defined Steps

Defining your steps is a great way to help you achieve your goals. Think about it this way - if it’s achieving a new milestone in your career, what certifications would you need to get to the next steps? How many hours would this require? How much reading would this take? When could you feasibly get to this step so that you are one step closer to your overall goal of a new career milestone? Like with anything important in your life, breaking a goal down and making defined steps will help make it easier to plan, prepare, and achieve your goal.

Planning Helps You Focus on What You Want to Achieve

This step cannot be underestimated. When you make an actionable plan toward your goals, you cut out the noise. Think about what can be missed, is every social event necessary right now? Or is your goal more important? Or, what can’t be missed? What activities, hobbies, and areas of enjoyment in your life do you not want to miss when it comes to this goal? With achieving goals there has to be some sacrifice, but you should not have to skip out on everything to make something happen. Instead, you prioritize.

If you want something to happen, you need to make changes in your life to get it done. Goals are no different. They take sacrifice, planning, and dedication. Planning for a goal is the number one step that you can take to achieve your life goals faster, and with more spare time.
